Homecoming is here!

San José State's annual Homecoming celebration begins Saturday as hundreds of alumni will participate in Classes Without Quizzes. It is a full week of activities throughout campus detailed on the Homecoming website. Registration is requested for a number of events, so be sure to make sure you've signed up for the events you plan to attend.

You won't want to miss Fire on the Fountain on Oct. 9, the bonfire and spirit rally or the day-of-game activities around Spartan Stadium, with live music, food and fun for the entire family. Please note that the football game against Utah State will begin at 4:30 p.m. to accommodate a national television broadcast by ESPNU. See the full schedule of events.

It's Not Too Late to Participate in the Golden Graduate and Legacy Reunions

All alumni who graduated in 1958 or earlier are invited to participate in reunion activities on October 10 and 11. Friday features a campus tour, lunch and exclusive tour of the SJSU Library's Special Collections, including the Steinbeck and Beethoven Centers. Reunion activities conclude Saturday with the pre-game tailgate and Homecoming football game.

Weiss, Chang Join Alumni Association Board

Chrissy Chang and Bob Weiss have joined the Board of Directors for the SJSU Alumni Association. "We are pleased to welcome two outstanding advocates for the Alumni Association and San José State to our board of directors," said Paul Richardson, executive director of the SJSU Alumni Association. "Both Bob and Chrissy bring tremendous experience and strong community networks to our organization."

Chang is a two-time graduate of San José State, having earned a bachelor's degree in human performance in 1996 and a master's degree in human factors and ergonomics in 2004. She is the Physical Education Department chair, middle school teacher and coach at The Harker School. At SJSU, Chang was a women's basketball player and she has served on the board for the Order of Sparta, the Alumni Association for former Spartan student-athletes and coaches.

Weiss also holds a pair of degrees from San José State, earning a bachelor's degree in radio and television in 1958 and a master's degree in educational administration in 1963. He served the Santa Clara Unified School District for 25 years before transitioning to a career as a certified financial planner. A community advocate, Weiss has given his time and support to a variety of organizations including Planned Parenthood of Santa Clara County, where he served as president and was a board member for 12 years.

Student Fellowships

Linda Helland and Dipti Vaghela, SJSU graduate students in public health and environmental studies respectively, have received fellowships from the Robert and Patricia Switzer Foundation. The foundation provides $15,000 annually to each of 20 or more future environmental leaders completing master's or doctoral degrees focusing on critical conservation challenges. Read more.

KSJS Honors

SJSU's KSJS-FM (90.5) has been named Best College Radio Station by the Metro Silicon Valley newspaper. Also, Metro ranked KSJS's Dave "The Madman" Pirtle and Audio Dru second and third respectively among South Bay's top radio jocks. Read more.

Dennis has more than 20 years of experience in Silicon Valley and the high-tech industry, as a patent prosecutor and intellectual property litigator, a venture capitalist and an engineering manager. He specializes in developing offensive and defensive patent strategies for start-up electronics, software and biotech companies and their investors.

CATESOL Conference Hosted at SJSU Nov. 8
The California Association of Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (CATESOL) will be holding its annual Northern Regional Conference at San José State University on Saturday, November 8, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year's conference offers more than 50 individual workshops, an invited colloquium, a plenary session, interest group rap sessions, publishers' book exhibits, and networking opportunities. It is expected to attract between 500-600 attendees, most of whom are practicing ESL teachers or teachers-in-training in K-12 education, community colleges, adult education centers and higher education. Preston Publishes "Dog-Friendly" Guide

Debbi Preston, '72 BA, '74 MA, English, of Diamond Springs, California, published a hiking guide targeted for "dog lovers, experienced and novice hikers, and nature lovers everywhere," she reports. 48 Dog-Friendly Trails (AuthorHouse, 2008) offers month-by-month suggestions for hiking with your favorite canine in California's foothills and the Sierra Nevada. Suggested hikes take one day or less and are ranked in difficulty. More information.

Southward Signs on as AVP at New Mexico State

Scott Southward, '91 Journalism, is the new associate vice president of communications and public affairs at New Mexico State University. He oversees the university's communications and marketing services department. Prior to the New Mexico move, he served as public relations director at the San Diego State University Research Foundation.

Miranda-Pinkney Honored as Teacher of the Year

Veronica Miranda-Pinkney, '07 MA Educational Administration, instructional coach and English Learner Program coordinator at Bachrodt Academy, was recognized as San José Unified School District's Teacher of the Year. A leader in migrant education, she was also honored at the California Department of Education's 29th Annual Migrant Education Parent Conference in April. In July, she served as a state delegate to the National Education Association Representative Assembly in Washington, D.C.

Cole, Strubeck Named WAC Players of the Week

San José State linebacker Justin Cole and placekicker Jared Strubeck were named the Western Athletic Conference defensive and special teams players of the week, respectively, for their performances in the Spartans 20-17 win at Hawai'i. The accolades mark the first time since the opening game of the 2005 season that two Spartans were named a WAC Player of the Week for the same game. Learn more.

Men's Basketball Tabbed for Third in the Conference

With all five starters returning from last season's team and the start of another college basketball season imminent, the pre-season hype is underway. For the first time in many seasons, the Spartans men's basketball team is in the discussion. Blue Ribbon, now in its 27th year producing basketball annuals, tabbed the Spartans to finish third in its preseason predictions behind 2007-08 co-champions Nevada and Utah State, two teams that SJSU defeated at The Event Center last season. Burgos Earns Men's Soccer Honors

Efrain Burgos Jr., has been named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Brine Player of the Week. Burgos, scored two of San José State's three goals, and assisted on the other, as the Spartans went through a second straight undefeated week. Learn more.
