COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course will provide an opportunity for learning intermediate level Japanese without commuting. Students do their course work and assignments online. Students exchange and interact with the instructor via email. Use eBulletin boards to do assigned tasks. Do reading assignments, and collect information using websites. Students also learn cultural information via various web links. Students register as regular students and earn regular university credit units. Online sound wave is available for listening and speaking skills. Minimum system requirements: a computer with Java capabilities, Netscape4.08 or later versions, or latest version of IE. Prerequisites: 2 years college Japanese, equivalent, or instructor consent.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
1. Use online dictionaries and translation programs.
2. Read and write intermediate level Japanese (demonstrate a basic control of both simple and complex sentence structures, distinguish informal and formal styles, connect sentences into paragraphs using basic connectives) on the web.
3. Appreciate Japan by visiting websites that represent different aspects of Japanese culture and society.

REQUIREMENTS
1. Attend an orientation meeting (Tuesday or Thursday) ON CAMPUS at start of semester.
2. Do assignments online.
3. Take 1 midterm exam ONLINE.
4. Take 1 final exam ON SJSU CAMPUS (Monday, 5/21/01, 2:45-5:00pm).
5. Watch Silicon Valley Business on TV (every Sunday @10:00pm, etc.) and other course-related programs on TV when assigned.

GRADING
1. Reading short Japanese articles or stories (language, culture, society, business, etc.) and summarizing and/or writing your reactions or reviews to those articles. You will also answer comprehension questions of those articles, if any. .................................60%
2. Final exam....................................................30%
3. Midterm exam.............................................10%
4. Keep an online journal in Japanese (If possible, publish it on your website).............Up to 10% extra credit

PROCEDURES
1. Discussion of items causing difficulty shall be posted on eBulletin board or emailed to instructor.
2. Discussions, comprehensive exercises such as grammar, style, antonyms, word forms, punctuation shall be conducted via email with the instructor or via the eBulletin board.
3. Develop SCANNING and SKIMMING skills through scanning and skimming exercises using appropriate material.
4. Assignments will be emailed or faxed to instructor.

Suggested Reading Procedure
a) Prereading (scanning and skimming reading material)
b) 1st reading (information gathering reading)
c) Answering comprehension questions, if any
d) 2nd reading (thorough reading, focusing on understanding and interpreting the material)
e) Analysis of ideas (if necessary)
f) 3rd reading

POLICY ON FINAL EXAM
SJSU Policy requires that all courses hold a final examination (or final project) during the final examination period. There are no exceptions to this without the approval of both the Chair of the Department and the Dean of the College. Exceptions are rarely granted except in the most extreme circumstances.
