Report says cigars are as risky as cigarettes

BALTIMORE. A governemnt report says cigars can be just as lethal as cigarettes, causing similar cancers of the mouth, esophagus, larrynx and lungs.

The National Cancer Institute report also found that regular cigar smokers who inhale have an increased risk of coronary heart disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

The study concluded that the risks of serious illness don't depend on whether cigars or cigarettes are smoked, but rather on the how often people smoke them and how much they inhale.

"To those individuals who may be thinking about smoking cigars, our advice is -- don't. Cigars are not safe alternatives to cigarettes and are addictive." concludes the report (The Baltimore Sun).
