Using a social ecological framework emphasizing the relationships between health, disease, environment, and behavior, the Health Science Department offers knowledge and skills useful throughout life, practical and analytical experiences necessary for professional practice and leadership, and the foundation for a wide range of careers and contributions to society.
To support the university and department missions to enrich the lives of students through curriculum and activities related to the multidisciplinary field of health science. The program emphasizes the knowledge, skills, and ethical principles of community health in an increasingly diverse society, useful throughout life and applicable to a wide range of professional fields, with particular preparation for careers in public health, gerontology, health services administration, and other health-related professions.
SLO 1.1 Read and critically analyze scientific and professional articles from the fields of health education, health services administration, aging, and other social sciences.SLO 1.2 Write grammatically and stylistically correct papers that reflect a review of relevant literature and/or integrate health related perspectives and experiences.
SLO 2.1 Recognize how the social, cultural, economic, political, and biological environments affect personal & community health.SLO 2.2 Describe the age related physical, psychological, and social changes that occur across the lifespan and discuss how those changes may vary by the social construction of race/ethnicity, culture, gender, religion, socioeconomnic status, sexual orientation, and disability.
SLO .3 Describe the U.S. health profile, including key indicators, determinants, disparities, access to health services, historical and contemporary trends and implications.
SLO 2.4 Use risk, resilience, and protective factors in the analysis of health promotion challenges and opportunities.

SLO 4.3 Discuss ways in which public health policies affect access, quality, and cost of health services, and how they are differentially experienced by various ethnic, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, disability, gender, and age groups.

To provide professional education encompassing a wide range of theoretical approaches and practical methodologies, that prepares and supports both students and graduates with the knowledge and confidence to apply their health education skills to program, policy, and community development.
The MPH program trains health education practitioners who are able to:
To develop students' professional skills, grounded in theory and refined through practical experience.
To help students develop analytical skills to see beyond specific events to patterns and structures, which underlie community health, including determinants of morbidity, mortality, capacity, and resilience.
To examine and articulate the ethical aspects of community health issues and dynamics, personal values, and the implications of both for public health practice.
To provide stimulating and current instruction in the conceptual framework and areas of knowledge basic to public health, and the core concepts and knowledge of community health education.
To nurture learning and professional development through collaboration.
To create an instructional environment that honors diversity, civility, honesty, and mutual respect.
To integrate faculty research activities with ongoing student learning.
To contribute to the body of knowledge and resources in community health education and health promotion, and in related fields of public health, including behavioral science and epidemiology, through community based faculty and student research activities.
To offer research and evaluation skills and resources of the MPH program to groups and organizations working to address community needs and concerns through public health interventions.
To contribute to the growth and development of the health education profession.
To offer the energy, talents, enthusiasm, and imagination of our program's students and faculty in service activities that promote community health.

To offer an integrated set of planned and evaluated learning experiences appropriate for advanced professional preparation in health education;
To offer an instructional program based on the areas of knowledge basic to public health and focusing on basic community health education concepts, knowledge, strategies, and skills;
To integrate knowledge, skills, theory, and practice in all courses and field experiences;
To integrate opportunities for enhancing skills and strategies of cultural competence throughout the curriculum;
To ensure exposure, instruction and practice in the basic content areas to all MPH students while allowing individual and informal specialization when desired; and
To regularly evaluate and refine the curriculum and broader course of study to keep pace with changing resources, new developments in our field, and the dynamic practice context.
To provide the educational foundation for students' research skills for practice, including needs assessment, behavioral and educational diagnosis, basic research design, program evaluation, and critical review and application of research;
To provide opportunities for student participation in research activities;
To provide opportunities for original research by interested students through the Master's Thesis or Graduate Project option;
To encourage the development of individual faculty research activities and projects;
To continuously integrate faculty research tools and findings into MPH course activities and exercises; and
To disseminate findings and contribute to the public health, health education, and related literature through research presentations and publications.
To regularly participate in collaboration, consultation, and other health education related activities with local, state, national and international communities, organizations, and initiatives;
To provide opportunities for students to offer service to local health education efforts through supervised fieldwork experiences, service learning, the Graduate Project option, and other co curricular activities; and
To engage in activities which preserve and promote the principles and the field of community health education through participation and leadership in local, state, and national professional organizations.
