Admission Requirements

Welcome to the admissions page for the MS in Data Analytics program at San José State University. Below, you will find the detailed requirements for admission into our program, including university-wide criteria and specific departmental prerequisites. Whether you are a domestic or international applicant, this guide will help you understand the qualifications and steps necessary to join our vibrant academic community.

Program Requirements

  • Academic Qualifications: Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale), either overall in their undergraduate degree or in the last 60 semester (or 90 quarter) units of coursework.
  • Coursework Prerequisites: Completing at least one semester each in college-level calculus, statistics and programming is required.
  • Conditional Admission: Applicants with minor deficiencies in the above prerequisites may be granted conditional admission to the program, with specific conditions outlined in the admission offer.
  • Materials not required for admission: GRE, GMAT scores and letters of recommendation are not required for admission.

University Requirements

  • Application Process: All candidates must apply via the CSU admissions portal, Cal State Apply and fulfill all university-wide admission criteria.
  • International Applicants: In addition to holding a bachelor’s degree, international applicants (or those who earned their degrees in non-English-speaking countries) must meet the minimum English language proficiency requirements as specified on the Graduate Program Test Requirements webpage.
  • Admission Status: Applicants may be admitted with either classified or conditionally classified standing, depending on their academic qualifications and preparedness. Visit Special Session Versus Regular Session for more information about the difference between special and regular sessions. 

Admission to Classified Standing

An applicant can be admitted to classified standing if the applicant has a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a grade point average of 3.0 or better. In addition, this applicant’s preparation for advanced graduate work in mathematics and computer programming must be considered adequate to meet the course prerequisites and other departmental requirements. 

Admission to Conditionally Classified Standing

An applicant might be conditionally admitted to the program with a marginal deficiency in the above requirements. The admission letter will explain the required coursework, terms and conditions for satisfying academic requirements and attaining classified standing.
