The Season That Wasn't (Part I)

In 2002, the Athletics Department undertook a massive (and presumably expensive) campaign to increase attendance at SJSU football games.  There is no other way to describe this attempt as anything other than a failure.  Attendance at every single game of the season was dismal.  Specifically,

The net result?  Average attendance during the 2002 season was 10,360, an increase of only 1.5% from the previous season.  This was true despite the fact that the local media clearly emphasized the need for SJSU to increase its attendance; despite the fact that the Division of Athletics funded a massive marketing campaign and reduced ticket prices; and despite the fact that the football team itself had a relatively successful year, with double the number of wins of the previous season.

Following this failure, the DIA seemed to adopt the position that 2002 represented a trial run, and that they would regroup and do better in 2003.  However, the 2003 season was also a failure.
