Animal Magnetism: Elizabeth Inchbald, Playwright
Composers Isaac Nathan and J. Augustine Wade
Various Lyricists
In accordance with the theatrical expectations of her period, Elizabeth Inchbald made room for song and dance in her comedies. As a cue for a musical interlude, for example, she has at the end of Act II the Marquis, pretending madness, hold hands and dance with his "lovely shepherdess" and her guardian. Lacking any record of songs included in Covent Garden productions of Animal Magnetism, Director Frederick Burwick drew suitable songs of the period, four of the five of which were composed by Isaac Nathan for James Kenney's highly successful Sweethearts and Wives and The Alcaid. The fifth song ("I have fruit, I have flowers") was composed by J. Augustine Wade. Vocal arrangements are by Holley Replogle (UCLA), and instrumental arrangements by Brian Holmes (San Jose State University).
