The History of the Economy of Boston
1. Boston has been and still is the dominant regional city of New England
2. Boston was founded in 1630 on Shawmut Peninsula at the estuaries of the Charles and Mystic Rivers.

3. Starting in 1804 major marshes were dammed and filled. Hills were cut to provide fill so Boston is now more level than it was originally.
4. Although Boston was a trading port it did not have a large hinterland to draw upon.
5. Textile and shoe manufacturing were located in Massachusetts initially because of the availability of water power for factories.
6. In the middle of the twentieth century manufacturing began leaving New England for lower wage, lower tax, lower regulation areas in the Mid-South .
7. Electronics firms associated with Harvard and MIT located on Route 128.
8. Route 128 lost its early lead, first in transistors and later in computers, to the Silicon Valley.
