The important matter is the relative size of the tax burdens. The magnitudes are hard to interpret because of the difference in the price level in 1765 compared to now. Incomes in the colonies, estimated at between $60 and $100 per capita per year, were some of the highest in the world at that time. In contrast incomes in Ireland were only about half as large as incomes in the colonies.
