Timeline of the History of London, England

• 43 CE: A Roman army unit establishes a camp on the north bank of the Thames River and names it Londinium. I
• 60: A Celtic tribe, the Icenians, under the leadership of Queen Boudicea capture Londinium and sack and burn it. The Roman commander had abandoned Londinium in order to fight the Britons from a more defensible position. They subsequenty defeated Boudicea's killing tens of thousands.The Romans rebuilt the city to a Roman plan.

  What prompted Boudicea's attack was that when her husband, the king ofIceni, died the Romans were going to confiscate all of his land and property. When she objected the Romans had her publically flogged and her two daughters raped.

• 122: The Roman emperor Hadrian visits Londinium.
• 140: About this time Londinium had a population of about fifty thousand. It had piped water and a sewage drainage system.
• 190: There was an invasion of Roman territories by Picts from the north.
• 190-225: The Romans constucted a defensive wall around Londinium. ts location corresponds to the present financial center known as The City of London. It had four major gates and several minor ones.
• 197: A commander of Roman troops in Britain, Clodius Albinus, tries to become emperor. He is defeated by a rival commander. That rival commander divides the Roman province of Britain into an upper and lower administrative units. The lower one is governed from Londinium and the upper one from the city that became York.
• 255: Construction was started on a defensive wall along Thames shore of Londinium. This was to fend off raids by ship-borne mauraders.
• 286: Carausius, the admiral of the Roman fleet for Britain is charged by the Emperor in Rome with corruption and treason sentenced to death.
• 288: Carausius declares the formation of a Brittanic Empire and secures allies in Britain and among the Franks in Gaul..
• 293: Allectus, a subordinate of Carausius kills him and assumes command of the so-called Brittanic Empire .
• 296: The forces of the emperor in Rome invade Britain and defeat the rebel forces. Allectus is killed and the rebellion ended. Reforms are carried out involving the division of the Roman province of Britain into several (3 to 5) administrative units. These reforms became known as the Diocletian Reforms.
• 340: Attacks commence of the northern border of Roman Britain by the Celtic tribes of the Picts and Gaels.
• 382: Magnus Maximus, the commander of Roman troops in Britain, attempts make himself emperor of the far western Roman empire.
• 388: Magnus Maximus is defeated by the forces sent by the Emperor in Rome. As a result of Magnus Maximus' revolt and defeat Roman forces in Britain are substantially depleted.
• 407-409: Barbarian hordes are able cross the frozen over rivers of the northern border of the Western Roman Empire. They overwhelm the Roman forces in Gaul and Hispania. This cuts off communications between Rome and Britain. Roman officials did not get their pay began to abandon their duties. Imports and exports to and from Londinium decline drastically. The Roman general in Britain, Constantine III, declares himself the new Roman emperor. He takes his troops and crosses the English Channel into Gaul. Constantine III's move into Gaul to claim the emperorship is taken to be Rome's withdrawal of forces from Britain, but it was not this at all. Constantine III was acknowledged as the co-emperor of the Western Roman Empire in 409 but he abdicated in 411 and was captured by his enemies and executed.
• 407-450: Roman Britons continue live in the Roman settlements without adminstration (or taxation) from Rome. They had to cope with the attacks by the Celtic Picts and Gaels on land and Saxon and Irish marauders from the sea. Saint Patrick was a Roman Briton captured by Irish maraders as a boy of 16 and taken to Ireland as a slave. He escaped as a young man of 22 and then later as a cleric returned to Ireland to convert the people there to Christianity.
• 457: The former marauders began to settle in Britain and this migration continued over the next two centuries. The Angles came from what is now southwestern Denmark and they settled in central Britain and as far north as the Lowland Scotland. The Jutes came from northwestern Denmark and settled in the southern tip of Britain. The Saxons came from the northwestern coastal area of Germany and they settled in the southern part of Britain. The Anglo-Saxons drove many of the Britons west into Wales and Cornwall. The wal in these two names connoted foreigners.
