Day 10, Aug 16 - Friday

We got up early, today (8:30 - I guess early is relative, huh?) and hit the surf of Poipu beach. It was our third time on the waves and we all agreed to say that we practiced what we learned at the first lesson last week. Well, I'm gonna add, for the benefit of those who are taking the time to read this, that we need more practice. First, we walked with our longboards about 15 minutes just to get to the beach. Then, we spent about 2.5 hours out there and, pretty much, just got a lot of exercise. Then, it was another 15-minute trudge back. It was a beautiful day, though - mostly sunny and warm. Plus, we saw more chickens in Poipu so it wasn't a bad morning. After our surfing "adventures," we ate at a nice little pizzaria in Koloa which is just a few miles from Poipu. It was good pizza and very filling. We got a quick ice cream at the shop a few doors down and then were quite tired so we spent the afternoon on the beach behind the hotel. Vienna snorkeled. Andy read, and I napped. I love napping. We stayed in the shade as much as possible, though. It was a lovely afternoon.

For dinner, we went to the Cafe Coco. It is very Santa Cruzian. Outside dining with lots of lush plants and trees around. Simple tables and plastic lawn chairs and the food offers lots of fresh fish, rice and vegetarian grub. We had salads and wraps. I enjoyed my Ahi Nori wrap but the Greek salads were not what we're used to. The atmosphere was very nice but the service was very slow. You can tell they aren't used to crowds. There was some entertainment, though. A man who used to be in the 60s group, "The Animals,"played guitar and sang Hawaiian songs. I always enjoy the entertainment out here. It was very nice. After dinner we had desert at Beezer's Ice cream shop. (Boy, we love ice cream, don't we?). It was decorated in old-fashioned soda fountain style - our favorite. A juke-box, checker box floor, red bar stools and lots of old-timey pictures of diners on the walls. The ice cream was also great. Vienna and I split a sundae with three scoops of ice cream, chocolate, Butterfinger, and Kona Coffee, with marshmallow, fudge and butterscotch topping and whipped cream on top. Wonderful! At least we shared, I didn't eat it all, myself. Andy got a brownie sundae that I had to help him finish. I love my family's small stomachs. We finished the evening sitting on the beach watching the water break and the moon over head with clouds slowly moving over it. An exciting yet relaxing day.
