Heading toward New Haven, slow
down in Westbrook and glass at the single, tiny white cabins of the appropriately
named Cabins Motel. Reminiscent of an age before the emergence of I-shaped
and L-shaped motels, the Cabins offer tiny fantasies of private ownership:
a room of your own for a few dollars. But if you’re planning to
stay for a week on the Connecticut shore, there’s really only one
choice: A Victorian Village Inn on Route 1 near Clinton. There, Patrice
LePera and her husband Al Lynch have refitted a bunch of formerly dilapidated
cabins into a Gingerbread fantasy of roses, birdhouses, and fancy latticework.
Lit by gas lamps and filled with antiques, the Village offers unique time
travel experience for lovers of nineteenth century art and design.
