Driving north on 61 from Natchez
to Vicksburg, you’ll find the usual chain opportunities, but few
genuinely memorable stays; one is the Battlefield Inn. Once a franchise
operation but now independently owned, the Battlefield reflects the architectural
equivalent of a mullet haircut: formal lobby in front, casual rooms in
the back. Of course, the Battlefield never takes itself too seriously,
as evidenced by its dozens of humorous billboards like “Stay awhile.
Grant did.” You’ll find plenty reasons to stay including a
number of colorful (and loud) parrots, a mini-golf course, and proximity
to one of the most important Civil War battlefields in the country.
