Applying to SJSU
San Jose State University now offers three types of Undergraduate Admission to international students. In addition to our regular Direct and Transfer Admission, we also offer Conditional Admission for academically qualified students who have not yet achieved the required English language proficiency test score.
Direct Admission Requirements
You qualify for Direct Admission to Undergraduate programs if you ...
- Have earn the equivalent of a U.S. 3.0 grade point average (GPA) or an average of “B” grades. (Please note that some majors require higher GPAs than others.) If you do not have a 3.0 GPA, you are required to submit SAT or ACT scores.
- Have completed three years of college preparatory mathematics with a minimum grade of “C” or better.
- Have submitted official test scores from an approved English language proficiency test (TOEFL, IELTS or PTE).
- Have submitted official secondary school (high school) transcripts, which must include the completion/graduation date.
- Highly recommended: take SAT or ACT (See Competitive Admission Process)
Transfer Admission Requirements
You qualify for Lower Transfer Admission to Undergraduate programs if you ...
- Have Earned less than 60 semester/90 quarter transferable units.
- Have met all Direct Admission Requirements. (Please refer to the Direct Admission Requirements in the section above).
- Have earned a grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or greater in all U.S. college/university work and an “above average GPA” in any international coursework.
- Have submitted official test scores from an approved English language proficiency test (TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE) unless exempt.
- Be in good standing at the last institution you attended.
You qualify for Upper Transfer Admission to Undergraduate programs if you ...
- Have Successfully complete the equivalent of 60 semester/ 90 quarter transferable units (i.e., minimum requirement). SJSU does not accept applications from individuals seeking a second bachelor’s degree; consider applying to a graduate level program.
- Pass the four basic skills courses equivalent to those taken at a U.S. college or
university with a grade of “C” or better (see list below). The four basic skills courses
and minimum of 60 semester /90 quarter transferable units must be completed by the
end of the spring term prior to fall admission. Summer coursework will not be considered
to meet these requirements.
- A1- Oral Communication (Course must have been taught in English; online courses not accepted.)
- A2 - Written Composition (English)
- A3 - Critical Thinking (Logic)
- B4 – Mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning (Intermediate Algebra as prerequisite)
- Earn a grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or greater in all U.S. college/university work and an “above average GPA” in any international coursework.
- Be in good standing at the last institution you attended (i.e., not disqualified).
- Submit official test scores from an approved English language proficiency test (TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE) unless exempt.
Conditional Admission Requirements
You qualify for Conditional Admission to Undergraduate programs if you ...
- Have not taken the TOEFL/IELTS OR
- If you have taken the TOEFL/IELTS and fall below the university requirements.
- Have completed studies at a secondary or high school with grades equal to a U.S. grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 ("B"), or above.
- Have completed at least three years of college preparatory mathematics.
