David Parent, assistant professor of electrical engineering, organized a visit to campus by approximately 90 fifth graders from Los Paseos Elementary School. The students were able to etch their own four-inch silicon wafers with their school's Panthers' mascot wearing a Spartan helmet in the College of Engineering fabrication lab. Besides learning about solar cells and treatments for diabetes, the students also visited the King Library. This summer, Parent is also continuing to work with Cadence on a long-term grant to develop curricula in circuit design.

Margaret A. Kaluzny, lecturer in the Department of Geography, will participate in a six-week seminar at the University of Chicago's Oriental Institute as part of a National Endowment for the Humanities Grant for University Teachers. According to Kaluzny, the seminar will provide an opportunity for intensive collaborative study on culture and communication in the pre-modern Islamic World, which will help her gain a deeper knowledge of current scholarship in the field. Joyce Osland, professor of organization and management, is serving as a senior research fellow at the Army Research Institute this summer. She will also teach a seminar on Developing Global Leadership at the Summer Institute for Intercultural Communication in Oregon. Contact Osland at osland_j@cob.sjsu.edu.
