Jackson and Meyerson, Stone, Pesek, and Powell.
Lecturers Jean Jackson and Marion Meyerson
in communicative disorders and sciences are teaching the students in Project
Fo'na at the University of Guam. The project is a graduate program resulting
from a partnership between SJSU and GU, which is funded by the U.S. Department
of Education. Professor Gloria Weddington joined them for a week to advise the
students. Contact her at weddingg@email.sjsu.edu.
Bradley Stone, chair of the Department of Chemistry, hosted a National Computational Science Institute workshop at SJSU on Introductory Chemical Computation, sponsored principally by the Shodor Foundation and funded by the National Science Foundation. Participants were primarily chemistry professors at colleges and universities from around the country who met to develop new curricular material involving state-of-the-art software in computational chemistry, including molecular modeling, spectroscopy, kinetics and thermodynamics. Contact Stone at bstone@science.sjsu.edu.
Joe Pesek, professor of chemistry, presented two lectures at international conferences: one at the 29th International Symposium on High Performance Liquid Phase Separations and Related Techniques, in Stockholm, Sweden; the other at the DICP Symposium on Separation and Detection of Biomolecules, in Dalian, China. Later this month, Pesek, one of 50 chemists selected from around the country, will make a presentation at a poster symposium on the broader impacts of science, a program sponsored by the Division of Chemistry of the National Science Foundation. Pesek says that the presentation will focus on how student research has resulted in commercial products. Contact Pesek at pesek@sjsu.edu.
Ben Powell, assistant professor of economics, was a guest lecturer on economics at the Institute for Humane Studies at Duke University. He also spent a month as visiting fellow at the American Institute for Economic Research in Great Barrington, Mass. Contact Powell at gmubenpowell@yahoo.com.
