Each year, California State University student volunteers contribute nearly 30 million hours of community service learning, both as part of their academic experience and as a university-encouraged service, reports the Office of the Chancellor. This is the equivalent of a $200 million contribution to their communities, even at a minimum wage. At San José State University, more than 2,900 students participated in courses with service-learning during the 2004-2005 academic year, says Debra David, director of the Center for Service Learning. Each semester, for example, more than 125 students from many departments assist The Health Trust in providing health screening and education to hundreds of people with limited access to health services through an Open Air Health Fair held at the Berryessa Flea Market.
