Debra David, director of the Center for Service-Learning and professor of health science, was recently named to the grant review panel of the Johnson and Johnson/Rosalynn Carter Institute Caregivers Program. Last month, she traveled to the Jimmy Carter Institute in Atlanta, Georgia, to participate with the other panelists and the former First Lady to select the 2005-06 grantees. David also reports that Natasha Lovelace, an SJSU psychology major who works with David at the center through a Students in Action grant, was invited to speak at the July CSU Board of Trustees meeting about community service learning efforts on campus. Kathryn Lindhold-Leary, professor of child and adolescent development, was a featured speaker at the 13th Annual National Two-Way Bilingual Immersion Program Conference, in Monterey. Approximately 1,100 educators from more than 370 bilingual immersion programs throughout the United States were there to participate in the conference. The occasion also marked a celebration of the Year of Languages.
Preston Rudy, assistant professor of sociology and oral historian, has held public forums on his research on the impact of the Vons strike of 2003/04 on Bishop and Mammoth Lakes at both the Community Center in Mammoth and at the Masonic Hall in Bishop. The study has interviewed a cross-section of former Vons employees, shoppers, strike supporters, replacement workers and local business owners. When completed, the taped oral histories will become part of the archives of the Eastern California Museum in Independence. Linda Levine, lecturer in recreation and leisure studies, has developed a six-week workshop for women on "Creating a Meaningful Life!," which she will launch this month in her home. Levine has re-created the course she has taught for more than seven years at SJSU, and will facilitate six group-coaching sessions this fall on clarifying priorities, dreams and goals.
