This fall, President Don W. Kassing and Professor Annette Nellen, chair of the Campus Reading Program, are facilitating a book discussion to help heighten campus attention to SJSU's new Vision 2010 and the shared value of student success that is being emphasized for the 2005/06 academic year. Entitled, Student Success in College: Creating Conditions That Matter, published in March 2005, the book examines 20 institutions with a variety of programs and practices that have led to high graduation rates and better-than-expected scores on the National Survey of Student Engagement. Twenty-four faculty, staff and students are participating in the group discussion. Says Kassing, "Our intent is to look at current research and discuss how to re-invigorate our efforts to become a prominent student-centered campus." Kassing has encouraged all members of the campus community to consider: "What have I done today to improve student success?" For more, see www.sjsu.edu/ugs/reading/#else.
