SJSU's Educational Talent Search Program, which supports disadvantaged students seeking college degrees, began the new academic year with good news from U.S. Rep. Zoe Lofgren. Lofgren telephoned the university from the floor of the House of Representatives in Washington, D.C., to announce that the program had successfully secured its fifth year of funding. Frank Castillo, director of SJSU's Office of Pre-College Programs, reports the $220,000 award will be used to provide 600 students at East Side Union High School District and the Alum Rock Union Elementary School District with a wide range of services including homework centers, hands-on technology classes and parent empowerment workshops.
