The Associated Students of SJSU will mark the 38th anniversary of the 1968 Olympics ??? when Tommie Smith and John Carlos made the powerful, silent protest memorialized by the sculpture outside Clark Hall ??? with an event this week on student activism. "SJSU Student Advocacy: Past and Present" will be held in the sculpture garden at noon on Wednesday, October 18. The gathering comes two weeks after the death of Peter Norman, the Australian sprinter and third medal recipient on the podium with Smith and Carlos, who were SJSU students at the time. President Don W. Kassing will pay tribute to Norman, who supported Smith and Carlos and agreed to be left off of the sculpture so that others could take a stand. Following remarks by Kassing and AS President Alberto Gutierrez, six speakers will take turns discussing student advocacy efforts. MOSAIC Cross Cultural Center Coordinator Hyon Chu Yi-Baker will serve as mistress of ceremonies. Associate Professor of Sociology Scott Myers-Lipton helped organize the event. Read more.
