College students with laptop computers spend more time on task, but this time is not always productive or efficient, according to a recent study. Anne L. Fay, director of assessment at Carnegie Mellon University's Office of Technology for Education found that "work was interspersed with other activities, such as checking and writing e-mail, instant messaging, reading news, etc." She also found laptop users "tried to use the computer for everything even when ... other sources of creation would have been more appropriate or efficient."
