An SJSU group seeking to aid Hurricane Katrina victims will stage a national summit this week to raise awareness of Gulf Coast conditions. The summit, to be held on nearly 40 campuses nationwide, will feature documentary screenings, speakers, teach-ins, rallies and petition drives. Participants include students at Stanford University, the University of California-Berkeley, Tulane University, the University of Michigan, Howard University and Princeton University. The group has proposed what they call the Gulf Coast Civic Works Project, which seeks federal legislation to implement a civic works program that would create 100,000 jobs for Gulf Coast residents seeking to rebuild their communities.
