Carmen Sigler, provost and vice president for academic affairs, is featured in September's Greentree Gazette, a magazine covering business issues associated with higher education. In an interview, the provost discusses her background, the field of engineering, 01SJ Festival, and importance of liberal arts for business and engineering majors. "Employers tell us they are looking for graduates with writing skills, communications skills and an understanding of other cultures as well as ethical dimensions of their professions. Those are the components of a liberal education," she said.
Cheryl Allmen-Vinnedge, SJSU Career Center director, said a recent job fair for on-campus employers "was a huge success." The event, held in August in partnership with Associated Students and Student Involvement, featured 18 employers and attracted 1,800 attendees. "Student turnout was overwhelming and some tables were so inundated with prospects that some employers opened 30 minutes early," Allmen-Vinnedge said.
Bethany Shifflett has been appointed interim chair for the Department of Hospitality, Recreation and Tourism Management, which was formed after the recent merger of the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies and the Department of Hospitality Management.
