Get a sneak peak this week at 01SJ, a biannual media arts festival returning to downtown San Jos?? June 4-8, 2008. "Abundance," a massive interactive media arts piece, will be projected on the San Jos?? City Hall rotunda at 8 p.m. Friday, September 28. Gilberto Gil, minister of culture for Brazil, will attend the event following a short meeting earlier the same day with President Don W. Kassing and San Jos?? Mayor Chuck Reed. Gil, a Grammy Award-winning Brazilian singer, guitarist and songwriter, will be in the Bay Area to learn about 01SJ and meet with tech executives. During a private reception preceding "Abundance," Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Carmen Sigler will formally announce the founding of FUSE, a media arts residency program created by SJSU's CADRE Laboratory for New Media and the Montalvo Arts Center. Media arts, an emerging genre that's perfect for Silicon Valley, uses computers, mobile media, social networks and more to create art that examines the most pertinent issues of our time, including globalization, sustainability and censorship.
