The New York Times and Wall Street Journal both recently quoted Associate Professor Roberto Gonzalez in stories about anthropologists aiding U.S. troops in the Middle East. The anthropologists have been credited with reducing combat by helping military leaders understand subtle points of tribal relations. However, Gonzalez "called participants in the program naive and unethical. He said that the military and Central Intelligence Agency had consistently misused anthropology in counterinsurgency and propaganda campaigns," the New York Times said. More from the New York Times.
