The Industrial Design Junior and Senior Show will begin at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, December 13, at the San José City Hall Rotunda. Projects include a solar-powered flood light for urban construction sites; an interactive garden allowing collaboration between nature, humans and technology; and a sculptural locking system that clamps bikes in place, preventing theft without requiring cyclists to carry locks. The School of Library and Information Science recently marked the 40th anniversary of its accreditation with "Forty for Forty," a celebration at the Hotel Sainte Claire. The event highlighted more than 40 alumni including numerous award-winning librarians, tech company library directors, published poets, bestselling romance novelist Jayne Ann Krentz, Chinese American Librarians Association Past President Yuhfen Diana Wu and Sunnyvale information literacy champion Valerie Torres. The King Library will host a half-day research forum beginning at 8:30 a.m. Friday, December 14, in King 255/257. Topics include "Access Denied: Government Web Sites -- The Disappearing Act?" by Associate Librarian Susan L. Professors Alice A. Carter and J. Courtney Granner of the School of Art and Design and Physics Professor Alejandro Garcia have received a $199,912 grant from the National Science Foundation to support the development of course content and materials for "The Physics of Animation: Master Classes in Physics for Visual Artists." This collaboration between the Animation/Illustration Program and the Department of Physics and Astronomy will bridge the two disciplines and offer visual artists the opportunity to take courses in physics.
Professor Constantine Danopoulos of the Department of Political Science and Associate Professor Jo Farb Hernandez of the School of Art and Design have received 2007-2008 Fulbright Scholar grants. Also, SJSU will host visiting Fulbright Scholars Joachim Fried, director of the Salzburg Seminar in Vienna, Austria, and Valentina Antipova, library head for the Pskov Regional Teachers In-Service Institute in Pskov, Russia. Professor Michael Kaufman of the Department of Physics and Astronomy recently attended a conference in Germany where 70 international participants discussed new research on star formation. Kaufman spoke about his work with oxygen chemistry and the role of ice in star-forming clouds at the event, titled "Far-Infrared and Submillimeter Emission of the Interstellar Medium: Models Meet Extragalactic and Galactic Observations."
Dr. Elba Maldonado-Colon, chair of the Department of Special Education, will be named "Outstanding Latina Faculty in Higher Education" by the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education at its national conference in March. Read more.
Professor Don Reed recently presented a paper, "Using NSF-MARGINS Research Results in the Undergraduate Classroom," at a conference in Oregon where 80 international scientists synthesized research on underwater earthquakes and landslides, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions. Reed also co-led a discussion at a workshop in Hawaii on developing Web-based resources incorporating new oceanographic research for undergraduate classroom use. Eighty-five international scientists at the event shared geophysical, geochemical and geological research on the Pacific Ring of Fire.
