Duo Li, a San José State undergraduate majoring finance, took first place in the landscape category of the 2007 Canon Photography in the Parks Photo Contest. The national competition culminated with winners selected through online voting. The photo, "Moonrise Over the Olympic," features Olympic National Park, Washington. Li won a camera, lens and printer worth $5,000. Photography has been Li's hobby since high school. Although Li took a Department of Environmental Studies photography course, Professor Gary Klee has refused to take any credit for his student's accomplishment. "He was an extremely talented photographer already before coming to my class," Klee said.

Here's how Li described the competition: "The contest ran for a good portion of last year. The photo had to be taken at a national park. Ten final images were selected in October by a panel of judges, and those ten photos were displayed on Canon Web site and were open for public voting during November. Placement was based on number of votes received. There were two categories, landscape and wildlife. Whoever received the highest number of votes, regardless of category, receive the grand prize. Unfortunately, I missed the grand prize, but I did manage first place finish."

The Associated Students of San José State University also recently received a national commendation, the 2007 Web Site of the Year Award from the American Association of Webmasters. The panel received 16,000 applications. "This is far and away the best Web site the panel has seen this year. Your site integrates several software mediums and produces a seamless outcome," the association said.
