Cheryl Allmen-Vinnedge, Career Center director, served as a panelist on "Back to Basics: Rediscover the Fundamentals of Campus Recruiting" at the Campus Recruiting Forum in Burlingame this past December.
Carol Beattie has been named director of development for the College of Science. She was a consultant for non-profits and serves on the board for the Charles Armstrong School in Belmont. She has a bachelor's in communication and a master's in organizational communications from San José State.
Tom Bowen, director of athletics, received the Gen. Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletic Director Award from the All-American Football Foundation this past December. "This award is a reflection of the hard work and success of our student-athletes, coaches and department staff and the support we have received from the university, alumni and community the last three years," Bowen said.
Lorna Corbetta has been named director of development for the College of Humanities and the Arts. She was a research analyst for San José State's Division of University Advancement, and has a master's in library science from SJSU.
Ken Haycock, professor and director of the School of Library and Information Science, has received the Association for Library and Information Science Education national service award. As the association's president in 2006, he lead the development of the group's strategic plan, introduced board effectiveness measures, enhanced revenue development and formalized performance management.
Also, the School of Library and Information Science has received a $1,000 faculty innovation award from the association and Pratt Institute. The award is for significant and evolving use of emerging technologies. Haycock specifically noted the efforts of Associate Director Linda Main and Assistant Director for Distance Learning Debbie Faires.
Maria Ochoa, lecturer in the Department of Social Science, recently published "Shoot Out: Women of Color Respond to Violence." The book includes contributions from Professor Shahin Gerami, San José State alumnus Teresa Pedrizco Romero and graduate student Hosai Eshan. Read more from the Department of Social Science.
Carmen Sigler, provost and vice president for academic affairs, has been named an advisor to the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation in San José. The foundation seeks "opportunities that can transform both communities and journalism, and help them reach their highest potential," according to its Web site.
Professor Alan Soldofsky of the Department of English and Comparative Literature gave a paper on the influence of classical Chinese poetry on modern California poets at the American Literature Association International Poetry Symposium in Puerto Vallarta this past December. The paper is related to research for his upcoming anthology of Northern California poetry from the late 19th century to the early 21st century.
