SAN JOSE, Calif., -- The San José State University Police Department will conduct an active shooter response exercise 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday, April 18, at MacQuarrie Hall. Expect to see and hear emergency personnel and vehicles in the southwest corner of campus. Volunteers from the campus community will pose as evacuees, victims and the suspect. The media may cover the event. Similar exercises have or will be held on all 23 California State University campuses.
Media Parking During the Exercise
Parking will be reserved for the media in Lot 13, which is north of Duncan Hall and very near MacQuarrie Hall, where the exercise will take place. Lot 13 is accessible from East San Salvador Street, near South Fourth Street. View a campus map.
Telephone-Based Emergency Notification Drill
Also the morning of April 18, the University Police Department will test San José State's telephone-based emergency notification system. The system uses speakers built into most office and classroom telephones. Students and employees will hear a short tone alerting them to an incoming message and then the message itself. The test message will not be audible outdoors or from telephones within King Library or Campus Village, areas that will be incorporated into the system.
Help Us Notify the Public
We are asking the media to help us notify the public about the exercise. We are also asking the public and media to refrain from contacting the police during the exercise or during a real emergency unless you or someone you know is in a life-threatening situation.
