SAN JOSE , Calif., -- For San José State's second annual Day of Service, over 1,000 faculty, staff, students and community members will spend Friday, April 25, in neighborhoods near campus, where they will collaborate on approximately 40 projects that will significantly improve the entire community's quality of life. These projects will include painting houses, registering voters, working with school students, and beautifying numerous parks, creeks, streets and defunct railroad lines.
"I am tremendously proud of everyone taking part in San José State's Day of Service," said President Don W. Kassing. "For the second year in a row, we have worked together on an event that not only reinforces our relationships with our city and surrounding neighborhood, but also brings real improvements to the place where we live and work."
Initiated in 2007 as San José State celebrated its 150th anniversary, the event has become an annual tradition, attracting 200 more participants this year than last year. Volunteers include sororities, fraternities and many other student organizations; students, faculty and staff from academic and administrative departments campuswide; residents of neighborhoods surrounding San José State; and members of more than a dozen partnering community organizations.
The SJSU Division of Student Affairs organizes the Day of Service with co-sponsors including the City of San José and CommUniverCity San José. SJSU organizers include Spartan Shops; Associated Students; the Student Union; University Police Department; Center for Community Learning and Leadership; and Department of Hospitality, Recreation and Tourism Management. Off-campus organizers include AmeriCorps, City Year and San José's Strong Neighborhoods Initiative.
