The 2008 Pulitzer Prize winning author Junot Diaz will speak, read and answer questions about his novel, "The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao," at 7 p.m. Saturday, September 20, in the University Theatre. Diaz spent 11 years writing the tale of Oscar Wao, a Spanish pronunciation of Oscar Wilde. Wao is a teenage Dominican who buries his broken heart and frustration in sci-fi novels and Star Trek action figures. Wao's family lives much as Diaz's own family did, balancing two lives and two cultures in New Jersey and their native Dominican Republic. The SJSU Center for Literary Arts and Movimiento de Arte y Cultura Latino Americana (MACLA) will co-sponsor Diaz's appearance. The event is free and open to the public.
