The College of Social Sciences will host a symposium on the presidential election at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 7, in the University Theatre. The symposium will examine the issues presidential candidates should be discussing and why. Panelists will include Larry Gerston, professor, political science; Lydia Ortega, chair, economics; Scott Myers-Lipton, professor, sociology; and James Lull, professor emeritus, communication studies. The event will be hosted by Tim Hegstrom, College of Social Sciences dean.
Members of the media are welcome to join around 70 students, faculty and community guests who will gather at 6 p.m. in Dwight Bentel Hall 133 to watch and analyze the second presidential debate, which will be held Tuesday, October 7. Professor Bob Rucker plans to conclude the event with a lively post-debate analysis. Rucker's class, The Media and Elections 2008, also posts a weekly online analysis of presidential campaign coverage and related ads. Rucker is a 32-year broadcast journalism veteran and former CNN correspondent.
