San Jose Magazine's November 2008 issue includes a four-page profile of San José State's new president. "His primary duty at SJSU will be to guide its future growth. As the director in a complex theatrical play involving tens of thousands of actors from students to instructors, he will seek to get the best performance from each and every one of them," wrote journalist Martin Cheek, referring to President Jon Whitmore's academic background in theater.

"I always judge a place by the people and what they want to do and where they want to go," Whitmore told the magazine. "My role will be to identify and focus where the energy might go, and then rally a lot of people to spend their energy on those specific areas that will help make this a better and better university."

The profile also offers fun facts: "Five things you didn't know about Jon Whitmore: (1) Dessert worth the calories: Chocolate. (2) His signature dish: Omelet with ham, cheese, jalapenos and olives. (3) His culture fix: Listening to Bob Dylan. (4) Someone he'd love to have lunch with: Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. (5) Made his parents proud: That he graduated from college three times."
