Placing an unprecedented cap on systemwide enrollment will be discussed at the next California State University Board of Trustees meeting Tuesday and Wednesday, November 18 and 19. An agenda and supporting materials have been posted on the CSU Web site.
The CSU is committed to admitting the top one-third of the state's high school graduates. However, due to state budget cuts, the system lacks adequate funding to cover all eligible applicants. Currently, the CSU is serving 10,000 students for whom the system receives no state funding.
To better align funded and actual enrollments, CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed plans to propose employing systemwide impaction policies. The policies, which would include supplemental admissions criteria, could in effect place a cap on enrollment for the entire 23-campus system for the first time in its history.
For San José State, the new rules, effective fall 2009, would mean most first-time freshmen from outside Santa Clara County would be wait listed and ranked for admission based on high school grades and test scores. SJSU has also moved up its application deadline for fall 2009 first-time freshmen to November 30, 2008.
