The University Police Department is urging everyone to "Resolve to be Ready in 2009." Ready.gov is a great place for more information. Get information on a basic emergency supply kit and a family emergency plan.

Here are few tips for work:

  • Identify the closest emergency exit and an alternate exit in the event your primary route is blocked. Stay to the right on staircases to leave space for emergency personnel. Avoid elevators.
  • Identify your building assembly point, where a manager will take attendance to identify missing people. View the SJSU Building Evacuation Assembly Point Map.
  • Familiarize yourself with the types of emergencies that can occur, such as earthquakes and fires, and the appropriate responses.
  • Familiarize yourself with the location and operation of fire extinguishers.
  • Prepare a family emergency plan and emergency supply kit.

In California, it's important to prepare for earthquakes.

  • Duck, cover and hold until the shaking stops. Take cover under a sturdy desk or table or against an interior wall.
  • Move away from file cabinets, bookshelves or other items that might fall.
  • Face away from windows and glass.
  • Move away from exterior walls.
  • Assess conditions outside before evacuating. It may be safer to stay indoors, a concept known as shelter in place.
  • Use the fire alarm to signal an evacuation only after ensuring it's safe to exit the building, unless there is a fire or other life threatening situation.
  • Follow the instructions of authorities.
