Judith Lessow-Hurley, professor of elementary education, was appointed to the California State University Doctorate in Education Advisory Committee by CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed.

Scott Myers-Lipton, associate professor of sociology, was the keynote speaker at the African American Community Service Agency's 2009 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Luncheon.

Kate Sullivan, professor of hospitality, recreation and tourism management, and seven student volunteers received the "You Make a Difference Award" from the city of San José and Christmas in the Park. Sullivan and her students worked at Christmas in July, a fundraising dinner and silent auction supporting the city's long-running downtown seasonal display.

Dick Tomey, head football coach, has been elected 2009 president of the American Football Coaches Association. "This is a thrill because I can remember back when I went to the AFCA Convention for the very first time," Tomey said. "When you achieve an honor such as this, all those memories start coming back. To be the president of the AFCA for 2009 is very humbling."

San José State graduate student Emilia Mendoza has received the 2009 National Planning Leadership Award for a Student Planner from the American Planning Association. Mendoza was honored for her exceptional service to her fellow students, nonprofit organizations and community. Only one graduate student is recognized annually.

Nick Peters, a San José State alumnus whose name is synonymous with baseball in San Francisco, was elected 2009 winner of the J.G. Taylor Spink Award in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Peters covered the Giants for 47 seasons ending in 2007. Peters was the 1960/1961 Spartan Daily sports editor.

San José State students Jason Wong, Aaron Chiang and Adrian Lui recently appeared in a New York Times photo essay highlighting their sneaker collection. Carlos A. Moreno, the Spartan Daily's photo editor, snapped the pictures.
