On Saturday, February 7, San José State and Mount Pleasant High School in East San José will begin a new chapter in their long-running literary relationship. That's the day author Samantha Lê and San José State interns will begin working with Mount Pleasant students on "East Side Voices," monologues based on interviews with residents in neighborhoods surrounding the high school. The project is being supported by a $2,500 grant from the Silicon Valley Community Foundation Donor Circle for the Arts Fund. San José State sponsors include the Center for Literary Arts and the Master's in Fine Arts Program in Creative Writing.
Mount Pleasant is already home to an award-winning literary magazine, "The Cardinal Quill." Internationally acclaimed authors who speak at San José State under the auspice of the Center for Literary Arts routinely visit Mount Pleasant as well. Poet Mark Doty, a National Book Award winner, will be there to present his work and speak about the writing life on Tuesday, February 24.
Lê's workshops will continue on Saturday mornings through spring term. Some East Side Voices pieces will be submitted for publication in a special section of the literary magazine, which is produced by students with assistance from advisor Joe Lovato.
