Carmen Sigler, San José State provost and vice president for academic affairs since November 2004, has announced her retirement.
"On behalf of the university, I would like to thank Carmen for her exceptional leadership and many years of distinguished service," said President Jon Whitmore. "I am grateful that when she and I first began discussing her retirement, she agreed to stay on until the end of summer 2009 to help me get to know campus, and provide us with enough time to conduct a national search for her replacement, though in my estimation, she can never be replaced."
"As you can imagine this has been a most difficult decision for me, because I love San José State University," Sigler wrote in an email to all faculty and staff. "San José State has been my professional home for more than two decades and through the years I have had the privilege of serving the university in many capacities. However, what I treasure most is having had the opportunity of being your colleague.
Some of you may be wondering what is in store for me in the next academic year. Well, I look forward to spending more time with Rob, my husband of forty-two years. I???ll be doing some scholarly research and perhaps teaching, as well as continuing my community work. But all of that is in the future.
For now, I look forward to continuing to work with you. We have a full agenda of projects moving forward and the challenge of managing them through this period of constrained budgets. I appreciate the efforts of all of you as we work to advance the mission of the university."
