How will you celebrate Earth Day this week?
Pick up fruits and veggies from the Spartan Smart Cart. A Healthy Campus initiative in partnership with Spartan Dining and Kaiser Permanente, the cart offers fresh produce outside Clark Hall from 10:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Tuesdays. Assistant Professor Marjorie Freedman and her Healthy Campus team learned through surveys that everyone on campus would eat more fresh produce -- a smart thing to do! -- if it were as easy and inexpensive to buy as other options. Kaiser and campus officials will gather at the cart at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, to celebrate the cart's February debut.
Stroll through the Earth Day fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, along El Paseo de Cesar Chavez. Fifty vendors, organizations and agencies will offer fair trade products and sustainable lifestyle information. You can also test ride an electric bicycle, watch Aztec dancers offer a traditional Earth values lesson, and even get job leads from participating green businesses and organizations. This event is organized by the Environmental Resource Center, a student organization.
Congratulate Transportation Solutions for winning a 2009 Clean Air Award from Breathe California, which said: "Since its launch in 2000, the program has helped the university to reduce its carbon footprint while also offering traffic and parking relief. Under the leadership of program manager Eyedin Zonobi, SJSU has developed an effective transportation center and Web site; a campus ride-matching program; a customized geographic information system; and an annual university-wide transportation survey. These efforts have helped increase the use of alternative transportation to campus by 300 percent over the past eight years. Less than half of the student population now drives to campus alone and about 15,000 students report using alternative transportation at least four days a week."
