Over 2,700 undergraduates will be recognized for academic excellence at the 47th annual Honors Convocation at 6 p.m. Friday, April 24, in the Event Center. The event recognizes both President's Scholars for earning a 4.0 GPA and Dean's Scholars for earning a 3.65 or higher GPA in at least two contiguous semesters of the three semesters prior to convocation.
The College of Business has signed academic exchange agreements with Toulouse Business School in France and National Taipei University in Taiwan. Dean David Steele and Executive-in-Residence Oliver Yu recently traveled to Taiwan, Xian, and Hong Kong, visiting 10 universities.
Carmen Sigler, provost and vice president for academic affairs, will receive a commendation from the San José City Council on Tuesday, June 9, honoring her 22 years of service to San José State. Sigler will retire at academic year's end.
Richard Chung, professor of material and chemical engineering, was one of five U.S. delegates invited by the Italian National Research Council to give a presentation at Nanotec2009.it, an international nanotech conference.
Anne Fountain, professor of foreign languages, received an Outstanding Teacher Award at the spring meeting of the California Language Teachers' Association. The award recognizes teaching excellence by foreign language teachers.
Jo Farb Hernandez, professor and director of the Thompson Art Gallery, presented "Vernacular Visions, Personal Voices" at an international conference co-hosted by the University of Genova in Italy and UCLA.
Nishanta Rajakaruna, assistant professor of biological sciences, received a $405,000 award from the U.S. Forest Service for research with students on plants growing on serpentine soils in the Sierra foothills.
Nick Taylor, faculty advisor for Reed, the campus literary journal, reports the magazine's April 2008 issue received a positive review from New Pages, a leading literary journal digest. Reed will celebrate its latest issue at 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 27, in Spartan Chapel.
Babak Sarrafan, associate professor of TV, radio, film and theatre, received an Award of Excellence for "Why Don't You Stay Music Video" from the 2009 Broadcast Education Association Festival of Media Arts.
Alan Soldofsky, Creative Writing Program director, received a 2009 Artist Fellowship Grant from the Arts Council Silicon Valley. He will read his poems during the Legacy of Poetry Day event at 11:45 a.m. Thursday, April 23, at Caret Plaza.
