Dr. Jason Laker has been named San Jose State's next vice president for student affairs. He will begin in his new role on Monday, August 16.
Laker comes to SJSU from Queen's University, a large public research university in Kingston, Ontario. He currently serves as associate vice principal and dean of student affairs, which is the university's chief student affairs officer. Previously, Laker served as dean of campus life at Saint John's University in Minnesota, and as director of business programs and workforce development, among other positions, at the University of Arizona. He also brings strong experience in student housing administration through positions at the University of Delaware and at Fort Lewis College.
Laker is an accomplished scholar and instructor, particularly on subjects of community and identity. At Queen's University, he is an instructor in the Department of Gender Studies and the Cultural Studies Graduate Program. He has published broadly and presented many professional conference sessions on topics relating to student affairs, identity and diversity, community leadership, and teaching and learning. He holds a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration and Organization from the University of Arizona, an M.A. in Community Counseling from Adams State College in Colorado, and a B.S. in Interpersonal & Public Communication from Central Michigan University.
