SAN JOSE, Calif., -- For the second consecutive year, San Jose State University will be unable to accept most admissions applications for spring semester due to state budget constraints. This includes spring 2011 applications from all prospective first-time freshmen, community college transfer students, graduate students, and students seeking a second bachelor's degree (post-baccalaureates). Exceptions include non-state funded programs for working professionals and several teacher credentialing programs.
"We are sending this message now to provide our prospective students with as much time as possible to consider alternatives, including spring admission to other California State University campuses or fall 2011 admission to San Jose State," President Jon Whitmore said. "It is with regret that SJSU moves forward with plans to close spring 2011 admissions, but we must ensure we have the resources needed to serve our students."
SJSU will monitor the state budget situation, and post any changes to spring 2011 admissions on CSU Mentor by Sunday, August 1. However, such changes are unlikely. When the CSU system closed for spring 2010 admissions, many transfer students postponed their college plans, and applied for the fall. As a result, SJSU's fall 2010 admissions process yielded nearly twice as many transfers than the previous year, from 2,300 in fall 2009 to 4,100 in fall 2010.
