Hyon Chu Yi, director of the MOSAIC Cross Cultural Center, accompanied five SJSU students and an alumnus from SJSU’s INVST (International and National Voluntary Service Training) sociology program on a three-week trip to Jamaica recently. The group worked with the Dare to Care organization, an orphanage for children who have HIV/AIDS. According to Yi, this 24-bed facility is the only one in Jamaica that cares for children who have the disease. Our students assisted with developing curriculum, including reading, writing, arts and crafts, and lessons on cultural empowerment. The students reported, Yi says, that this experience has changed their lives and that they plan to continue their work as scholarly activists.
