The National Academy of Sciences has announced that James Wayman, SJSU’s director of Biometrics ID Research in the Office of Graduate Studies and Research, has been named to the Wither Biometrics Committee. The committee is charged with reporting to the United States government on the capabilities and future of automatic human identification technologies (biometrics) and the role of government in their development. Wayman says that this appointment came about because of the campus-wide work at SJSU as the U.S. National Biometric Test Center, which reported to President Clinton through the Security Policy Board from 1997 to 2000. The National Biometric test Center resulted from a three-year competitive effort undertaken by the College of Engineering in 1994.
