Noting a 2004 National Endowment for the Arts study that found a 10 percent decline in literary readers in the last two years, the Academic Senate passed a resolution Oct. 25 endorsing the campus reading program begun this fall to build a culture of reading on campus. The program was launched by the Office of Academic Services to promote reading among students as well as community members as a way of encouraging literacy and a commitment to lifelong learning. One of the goals is to support students involved in the state's Educational Opportunity Program. Students, faculty, staff and community members are invited to read for one hour every Thursday, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., throughout the fall semester at five designated "reading lounges": African American Studies Dept. (WSQ 216), Mexican American Studies Dept. (YUH 30), Asian American and Africana Library Centers (King Library, 5th floor), MOSAIC Cross Cultural Center (Student Union), and Learning Assistance Resource Center (SSC).
