Asian Philosophy

Description

This course is on Asian philosophy. We will be looking at classical material on the nature of the self, mentality, reality, morality, freedom, knowledge, and liberation, deriving from thinkers who originate from the geographical regions of modern day India, China, Japan, and Korea. There are many thinkers and schools of thought originating from these areas. We will look at Nyaya, Advaita Vedanta, Mimamsa, Jainism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Daoism, as well as others. Our goal will be twofold. On the one hand, we will aim to learn the fundamental details of each of these schools. On the other hand, we will seek a critical assessment of these schools by way of a comparison with each other and other non-philosophical investigations of the world, such as in physics and psychology.
