ISEP Programs

Updated Page with Banner ImageSJSU is a member of International Student Exchange Programs (ISEP), a non-profit organization offering study abroad options at over 200 universities in 51 countries. You can study with ISEP for a semester or a year. Immerse yourself in classes at local universities and receive SJSU credit for each course. Make sure you also check out the ISEP scholarships. If you are interested in studying abroad in a location off the beaten path, ISEP has the program for you. ISEP has two types of programs- ISEP Exchange and ISEP Direct

On ISEP Exchange programs, you pay SJSU tuition and SJSU room and board. This means that every ISEP Exchange program will cost the same, whether you are studying in Austria, New Zealand, or Japan. Financial aid applies to all ISEP Exchange programs. You can choose up to 10 ISEP Exchange universities on your application, and you will be placed at the best option depending on the ISEP Exchange space and your academic needs. All ISEP Exchanges require a letter of recommendation from a faculty member.

On ISEP Direct programs, you pay the host university tuition and host university room and board. This means that the pricing for ISEP Direct programs will vary depending on the university’s tuition costs and the host country’s cost of living. Unlike ISEP Exchange, ISEP Direct programs guarantee that you can study at the university of your choice, as long as you have the minimum requirements. Not all financial aid applies to ISEP Direct programs, so if you receive financial aid, please contact Carolyn Guel ( to confirm how much of your aid can be applied to the program. ISEP Direct programs do not require letters of recommendation.

To complete an ISEP application, you will need to complete an additional application through the partner organization and pay a $100 application fee after submitting your application through the Spartans Abroad Portal.

Important note: It is not advised for international students to participate in ISEP programs due to additional costs assessed. If you are an international student interested in an ISEP program, please meet with an advisor to determine if you’d like to proceed.
