COVID-19 Protocols

The Study Abroad & Away (SAA) office has aligned fully with the San José State University COVID-19 vaccination policy. In accordance with this policy, all students participating in an SJSU SAA program will be required to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19, unless they have been approved for an exemption by SJSU

The SAA office aims to minimize the risk of transmission of COVID-19 between our students, faculty, staff, and global partners while abroad. This limits the likelihood of program interruptions that prevent students from full participation in program activities, including site visits, group excursions, events, and all required academic coursework.

While aligning with the SJSU vaccination mandate, we also aim to respect local, regional, national, and international regulations/requirements. Our goal is to ensure our students, faculty, and staff enjoy a successful and healthy experience abroad/away and to respect and support the wellbeing of the communities in which we operate programs.

Where possible, approved exemption statuses will be allowed. However, exemption statuses will not be allowed if there is an external (non-SJSU) mandate, regulation, guideline, or policy that requires the following:

  • requiring proof of vaccination for any portion of the study abroad and away program,
  • requiring rigorous and frequent testing that impacts one’s ability to fully participate in the entirety of the program schedule or impacts other participants’ program participation.

Students are expected to participate in all required programming which may include, but are not limited to: classes, workshops, and meetings.

We have added an easy to identify label to program e-brochures on the Spartans Abroad Portal to quickly identify programs that have a component(s) that will require proof of full vaccination. If you see this label, it means that you need to be fully vaccinated to participate in the program:
