General Volunteer Questions

• Can a volunteer assist a faculty member?

  • Yes. Volunteers can assist faculty members with research.

• If we need assistance on processing a volunteer, how can we get help?

  • Email up-volunteer-appointments@sjsu.edu.

New Volunteer Form

• Do I use the new form for faculty and staff volunteers?

  • Yes.

• Do I use the new form for Unpaid Visiting Scholars?

  • No. A new form will be posted soon for these types of appointments.

• Do I use the new form to extend an appointment?

  • Yes.

• Do I use the new form to reappoint a volunteer?

  • Yes.

• Do I have to submit an employee profile for a volunteer?
  • No, only the Volunteer Form.
• How much lead time is needed to process a volunteer with the new form?
  • Please get your form to University Personnel at least 5 days prior to your expected start date.
• When you extend or reappoint a volunteer do they have to submit the documents again?
  • Yes, at this time. We will review and revisit this process as people start to use the new form.

Background Checks for Volunteers

• Do all volunteers require a background check?

  • No, only those performing work that falls under the CSU Background Check Policy.

• How long do background checks/fingerprinting stay in effect?

  • One year. If a person had a background check or LiveScan on the SJSU campus within the last 12 months, they do not need a new check.
